When the 1500 km long Orinoco
River reaches the delta and empties into the Atlantic Ocean, it creates
a huge land area composed of many small rivers with numerous islands,
marshes, lagoons and mangroves.
The Indigenous Warao live here
in open-air "palafitos" or stilt houses, which traditionally
have thatched roofs. The Warao are hunters, fishers, light agriculturists
and artisans. They harvest the moriche palm, from which they make, flour,
wine and make exquisite baskets and hammocks.
