Finding dry land
There are pockets of high ground
in the totoral, but because they are swampy and covered with reeds,
it is impossible to pitch a tent.
The narrow shoreline between
the totoral and dry land is a skanky beach where animals graze and boats
sit abandoned in the mud. Once we had pushed our kayak as far we could
through the muddy shallows, we squelched knee deep in oozing muck up
to dry land with our gear. We washed off with our precious drinking
water afterwards.
