Peru: Kayaking Lake Titicaca

Back on tierra firma

After two uncertain days, we paddled up the confines of a narrow canal, the entrance to the community of Rio Ramis. Locals, busy working in their fields and along the canals, stopped working when they saw us cruising up the channel leading to their village.

They looked at us as though we'd dropped in from the Moon, took a few moments to absorb such a sight, smiled and exclaimed "welcome!", and then proceeded to laugh in disbelief.

We laughed back. The contrast of cultures was obviously ridiculous.
