Peru: Kayaking Lake Titicaca

The trip begins

We decided to paddle the Capachica Peninsula after consulting with TitiKayak Adventures in Puno. The area has all the things we look for when planning a trip: traditional villages, sandy beaches and good road access.

We planned to put-in at the south end of the peninsula and spend six days paddling up the coast, including a crossing to Isla Amantani, and then up the mouth of the Rio Ramis until we reached a road that crosses the river. Here, we would pack up and catch a bus back to our van.

As with most of our trips things didn't go exactly as planned, making for an unforgettable adventure

After transporting our gear to the beach by donkey, the locals admire our lightweight paddles and life jackets while we build the kayak.
